Giraffa con giraffine cosmiche al Museo terrestre

di Stefano NON
01 February - 11 May 2024

For the seventh edition of das - experimental art dialogues, CUBO presents Stefano Non's site-specific project titled TEMPI NUOVI, curated by Claudio Musso, which takes place in the two venues of the Business Museum.

A reflection on the idea of the museum and posthuman musealization is presented at CUBO's headquarters in Porta Europa. Giraffa con giraffine cosmiche al Museo terrestre (Giraffe with Cosmic Giraffins at the Earth Museum) represents a dialogue between a video work obtained by manipulating scientific documentaries on the lives of the highest living mammals and a small herd of animals recreated with sharp, shiny metal sheets.

The exhibition space is inhabited by four figures with angular silhouettes reminiscent of that of the animals mentioned in the title, with one adult specimen followed by three cubs. The choice of the giraffe is inspired by the role it plays in Charles Darwin's evolutionary theories and, in contrast, the fact that it is now considered endangered.

Charles Darwin, in his book The Origin of Species, hypothesized that it is the environment that selects the fittest individuals through small differences among living organisms. The exhibition, from its title, is set in a temporal dimension beyond the present, reflecting on the possible futures described by scientific theories such as string theory. Evolution and future are interconnected concepts, as is the case with museum and memory.

The animals interpreted by the artist, visit an exhibition site in a distant time, searching for cultural roots just like any visitor. They are motionless in the moment of their visit, attracted by a video that alternates between scenes from archival documentaries about the lives of giraffes. The combination of the animal kingdom and space exploration suggests a reflection on the connection between life on Earth and the possibilities of a future that might extend beyond our planet. The exhibition is also inspired by the fascination with a posthuman museum, a theme present in dystopian narratives such as the Black Museum episode of the Black Mirror series, where human souls are stored in digital media, including that of a man convicted of murder.

Public Program das.07

To deepen the themes of the exhibition projects, CUBO presents a series of events that kicks off during the week of Arte Fiera and continues until May. Among the guests stand some protagonists of the international cultural and scientific panorama such as Franco Farinelli, geographer, professor emeritus of the University of Bologna and author of "Geography. An introduction to world models" (Einaudi, 2003) and Guido Tonelli, the physicist who led to the discovery of the Higgs boson, author of "Materia. The magnificent illusion" (Feltrinelli, 2023).
